Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Expected Engine and Transmission
Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS features a 3-cylinder,MotorPlace 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine, delivering power of 112 PS and torque of 175 Nm, and a 1.2-litre dual-jet petrol engine with SHVS micro hybrid tech, as featured in Ertiga and Ciaz diesel in India. The Baleno RS transmission system will feature a 5-speed manual gearbox. A CVT automatic gearbox variant is also speculated.
Mechanicals
The Baleno RS will be powered by the debutant engine of the Boosterjet family – the 1.0-litre Boosterjet – which puts out 111PS of power and 170Nm of torque. It is likely to come solely mated to a 5-speed manual. Though it is available as an option in the stock India-made Baleno globally, it will be marketed as the performance-oriented version of the hatchback aka the ‘Baleno RS’ in the country.
The Baleno RS will go up against the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and theAbarth Punto . If you speak about the figures, the Abarth Punto is the quickest here, clocking the 0-100kmph sprint in 8.8 seconds. The European version of the Baleno powered by the 1.0-litre Boosterjet motor clocks 0-100kmph in around 11 seconds. However, the Indian stock version is lighter than its relative European model, so the ‘RS’ variant is likely to be lighter than its European counterpart as well. So it might end up matching the GT TSI’s figure of somewhere around 10 seconds for 0-100kmph.
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker will launch the much-awaited Maruti Baleno RS performance-oriented model in the country early next year. It was speculated to be launched during festive season 2016, that didn’t happen. The launch has been pushed in the first quarter of 2017. The Indo-Japanese carmaker, apparently, has now shifted its focus to fulfill the demand of the Baleno and Vitara Brezza. Like the regular Baleno, the performance oriented model will be sold through premium NEXA dealerships.
The Baleno RS will also mark Maruti’s entry into the performance-oriented hatchback segment, which is currently being dominated by the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and Fiat Punto Abarth. The hot hatch is powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (Boosterjet) that churns out 110bhp of power and 170Nm of torque. This powertrain will also power the upcoming Maruti Vitara Brezza petrol compact SUV, which is likely to be launched in the Q2, 2017. Media reports suggest that the Boosterjet motor will be more fuel efficient than the regular variant. This sporty hatch will sit above the existing Baleno, and take on the VW Polo GT TSI and the Ford Figo 1.5L.
